Blue Soapstone Dove Soapstone ornament, blue with etched designs, on hang-cord made of water hyacynth fiber. Approx. 4" long. The Artisans SMOLArt is a group of artisans who livin Tabaka, a rural village in Kenya. The group is a member of the International Fair Trade Association, and as such assures that artisans are paid fair wages for their work. In addition, the organization supports community development by contributing to projects that improve living conditions, education, and health of their members and their village. Artsans carved this ornament from soapstone mined from quarries in Western Kenya. Once carved, craftspeople smooth rough edges with sandpaper dipped in water. Then the item is painted with African motifs and etched accents added. Tools include household items -- from screwdrivers to hand-drills to switchblades. "Pangas" (machetes) are used to cleave soapstone in the mines. Soapstone is a form of talc and is fragile. Yet with proper care, this soapstone ornament will last for generations. $6.00 |
