Banana Fiber Person Ornaments These people ornaments are about 6 inches tall, each is different. They represent Kenyans in daily life. Each has a loop to hang on the tree. They are individually handcrafted from wire and banana fiber. The Artisans Esther Kariuki is an independent artisan who organized and trains women in her village to use the fiber of the banana plant, which would normally be discarded. The banana fiber is first dried, and then a light varnish applied. Once this process is complete, craftspeople cut the fiber into thin strips to make a limitless variety of products, including boxes, ornaments and mobiles. Esther ensures her artisans are paid a fair wage for their goods, which has enabled many in her small village to earn a sustanable wage from handicrafts. $5.00 |
